1896 Utah is admitted as the 45th U.S. state.
1937 In "De Jonge v. Oregon", the U.S. Supreme Court avowed that just because De Jonge spoke at a meeting of Communists, he could not be put in prison for 7 years as the state of Oregon wished to do.
1948 The UNION OF BURMA, an independent republic free from any ties with the British Commonwealth, was officially proclaimed. The new state immediately embarked on a program of radical nationalization of resources and industries -- however, not radical enough to satisfy the two Communist parties of Burma.
1951 President Truman (D) stated in his weekly news conference that the U.S. probably would not bomb China without a formal congressional declaration of war. (From The Encyclopedia of World History, Stearns, Houghton Mifflan Co., 2001)
1965 President Lyndon Johnson (D) outlined the proposals of his "Great Society" in his State of the Union address.
1980 President Carter (D) orders a partial embargo of U.S. grain sales to the U.S.S.R. in response to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. The embargo did great damage to the U.S. farmers while the Soviets simply got their grain from other, very appreciative countries, primarily Argentina.
1995 The House of Representatives voted 430-1 for an internal audit to be performed by an outside accounting firm. The results were not pretty.
2007 The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 bans incandescent light bulbs starting on Jan. 1, 2012. See details at "The Light Bulb Ban: A Simple Explanation". You may want to hoard a few as Karen De Coster is doing.
