1961 President Eisenhower (R) delivers Farewell Address warning the nation of the "Military-Industrial Complex".
1991 Gulf War, "Operation Desert Storm", starts. U.S. and allied missiles and planes bomb targets in Iraq and Kuwait. President Bush (R) has the highest approval rating from the public since that enjoyed by Franklin Roosevelt in December 1941.
1997 A court in Ireland granted the first divorce in the Roman Catholic country's history.
