1523 In Switzerland, Ulrich Zwingli published his 67 Articles, the first manifesto of the Zurich Reformation which attacked the authority of the Pope.
1786 A bill, authored by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, for "Establishing Religious Freedom" is enacted by Virginia.
1807 Robert Edward Lee, the Confederacy's top general, was born on this date. He died on October 12, 1870.
1861 The Georgia legislature votes to secede from the Union.
1955 A presidential news conference was filmed for television for the first time, with permission from President Eisenhower (R). [Bush just soon forget about it.]
1979 Former Attorney General John N. Mitchell (R) was released on parole after serving 19 months at a federal prison in Alabama
2001 In Afghanistan UN sanctions began following a 30-day deadline for the handover of Osama bin Laden. The sanctions coincided with the worst drought in 30 years.
