1882 Franklin Delano Roosevelt born this date (died April 12, 1945 at age of 63). 32nd U.S. President (1933-45)
1933 Weimar Republic President Paul von Hindenburg appoints Adolph Hitler Chancellor.
1942 President Roosevelt (D) signs the "Price Control Act", which was intended to limit inflation.
1948 Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated by a Hindu, Nathuran Vinayak Godse. for his part in the partition of India.
1968 On this date, some 50,000 Vietcong and North Vietnamese forces launched a ferocious surprise attack on Saigon and 30 provincial capitals in South Vietnam (Tet Offensive), penetrating the U.S. embassy grounds in Saigon at one point. The attack brought into serious question the reports of progress from U.S. officials and military commanders in Vietnam. It also brought a request from General William C. Westmoreland, U.S. commander in Vietnam, for 206,000 more troops -- later denied.
1972 British troops shoot dead 13 civilians in Northern Ireland when violence erupts at a civil-rights march in the Bogside, Londonderry. 1976 In Buckley v. Valeo, the U.S. Supreme Court rejects the placing of limits on spending for political campaigns.
2005 Iraq's elections to select a 275-seat National Assembly went ahead as scheduled. A total of 8.5 million people voted, representing about 58% of those Iraqis eligible to vote.
2005 U.S. somehow loses track of nearly $9 billion in Iraqi funds. [Probably stashed in some WMDs.]
