Year Event
1681 CHARTER OF PENNSYLVANIA signed, granting to William Penn the region between the 40th and 43rd parallels, extending 5 west from the Delaware River. These limits brought the colony into conflict with New York on the north and Maryland on the south. (from the Encyclopedia of World History)
1791 Vermont is admitted as the 14th U.S. state.
1801 Thomas Jefferson becomes President of the U.S. Some of his quotations.
1909 U.S. Copyright Law is passed by Congress.
1913 Department of Commerce and Department of Labor created out of Department of Labor and Commerce
1985 The EPA bans leaded gasoline in the United States. [A regulation, not a law -- did you notice the difference?]
1996 The Michigan police seized the automobile of Mrs. Bennis because her husband had performed a sexually indecent act (with another woman, unfortunately!) in it. On this date, the Supreme court affirmed the seizure, in spite of the words of our Constitution to the contrary. Forfeiture as "a crime fighting tool" continues to grow.

Quote of
the Day

    — Thomas Jefferson
