1774 In a speech to the Virginia Provincial Convention, Patrick Henry declares for American independence: "Give me liberty, or give me death."
1833 President Andrew Jackson signs legislation reducing the tariff over the next ten years. But the tariff legislation is accompanied by the inflammatory Force Act which affirms the president's right to use force to ensure state compliance with federal law. 1932 Norris-La Guardia Anti-Injunction Act was passed severely limiting the power to issue injunctions in labor disputes. The passage of the Norris-La Guardia Act signaled the beginning of a shift away from the government's anti-union sentiment. A precursor to the Wagner Act.
1983 President Ronald Reagan (R) proposed the Strategic Defense Initiative (popularly known as "Star Wars"). Bush (R) keeps it alive.
1994 Mexican PRI Presidential candidate Ernesto Colosio assassinated in Tijuana, Baja California.
1995 Ten were killed in a nerve gas attack on the Tokyo subway system by the Aum Shinrikyo religious sect.
1998 Today's Example of a Most Interesting Government Purchase (from the CBD): From the U.S. Air Force: "REMOVAL OF LEAD-CONTAMINATED PAINTED SIDING AND REPLACEMENT WITH VINYL SIDING", AMT $288,277.61, TO Thomas Brand Siding Company [Looks like the siding sales people are on the prowl again]
