1867 Alaska is ceded to the U.S. by Russia in a treaty signed this date. Russia was paid $7.2 million or 2 cents per acre!
1870 15th Amendment passes, guarantees right to vote -- to men but not women -- regardless of race.
1903 US Landing in Dominican Republic {pdf} to protect American interests in Santo Domingo during local unrest, March 30-April 21.
1959 The U.S. Supreme Court, in Abbate v. United States, says that being tried both in a state court and a federal court for the same crime does not violate the Constitutional ban against double jeopardy. [This is called "Political Logic"].
1981 In broad daylight, among a crowd of supporters and onlookers, John Hinckley, Jr., fired six bullets at President Reagan (R) in the space of three seconds, hitting Reagan, a police officer and a Secret Service agent, and seriously wounding Press Secretary James Brady.
