1588 Thomas Hobbes, philosopher, was born. Wrote the first treatise on the science of "Social Dilemmas", Leviathan.
1764 The British Parliament passed the Revenue Act, known as the Sugar Act, to raise funds to pay for colonial administration.
1792 President George Washington vetoes a bill designed to apportion representatives among U.S. states. This is the first time the presidential veto has been used in the US.
1933 President Roosevelt (D) signs Executive Order 6102 that makes owning gold illegal.
1951 Ethel and Julius Rosenberg are sentenced to death after being convicted of conspiring to steal atomic secrets.
1965 In Pointer v. Texas, 380 U.S. 400, the Supreme Court rules that the right to confront witnesses against an accused person applies to state trials.
1995 The House of Representatives passed, 246-188, a tax-cut bill, the final major item in the Republicans' "Contract With America".
1999 The U.S. Supreme Court, in WYOMING v. HOUGHTON (98-184), rules that it is ok for cops to search a citizen that just happens to be hanging out with a suspected criminal, in spite of what the Fourth Amendment guarantees.
2005 Today's Example of a Most Interesting Government Purchase:Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) has been awarded a $42.1 million, seven-year contract, to provide hardware integration support for a passive, anti-submarine warfare sonar system for the U.S. Navy's Virginia-class submarine program. [This was done just in case the U.S.S.R. is somehow broght back to life one of these days.]
