1783 Congress proclaims cessation of hostilities in the Revolutionary War with England.
1941 The Office of Price Administration (OPA) is set up to set prices on wages and supplies.
1951 General MacArthur is fired by President Truman (D) over differences in how the Korean war should be conducted.
1953 Department of Health, Education, and Welfare starts operations. [Under the Eisenhower administration - a Republican administration!]
1965 Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (Public Law 89-10) authorized grants for elementary and secondary school programs for children of low-income families; school library resources, textbooks, and other instructional materials for school children; supplementary educational centers and services; strengthening state education agencies; and educational research and research training -- and the authority to drug the kids to a stupor if they don't act right.
1968 President Johnson (D) signs 1968 Civil Rights Act.
1980 Equal Employment Opportunity Commission regulates sexual harassment.
2003 Journalists Julian Borger and Nicholas Watt, in today's Guardian Unlimited, report that, "Iraq's slide into violent anarchy will trigger a humanitarian disaster if US and British troops are unable to fill the power vacuum and reassert order quickly, UN and other aid officials warned yesterday." [Pshaw, Pshaw!]
