Year Event
1775 Paul Revere rides to warn the British are coming. The War of American Independence begins.
1943 Small bands of desperate Jews in the Warsaw ghetto stage a futile uprising rather than submit to the Nazis' "final solution". The "Battle of the Warsaw Ghetto" that begins Passover Eve, April 18, ends 6 weeks later with 5,000 German troops killed and wounded, but 5,000 Jews have been killed defending themselves against German tanks and artillery.
1956 US Air Force Aircraft Lost Over Kamchatka Peninsula (from "Published Cold War Shoot Down Incidents", http://www.aiipowmia.com/koreacw/cw1.html, no longer online), presumably shot down by USSR. No survivors.
1978 The U.S. Senate voted 68-32 to turn the Panama Canal over to Panamanian control on Dec. 31, 1999.
1983 Lebanon: Car bomb explodes in front of US Embassy, killing 63 and wounding over 100; Hizballah responsible.
1999 The bombing of Kosovo continues: The U.S. and its allies bomb a chemical plant on the Danube River in Yugoslavia, releasing more than 1,000 tons of ethylene dichloride and almost 1,000 tons of a solution containing 33 percent hydrogen chloride into the river. [As far as I know, no Environmental Impact study was made prior to the bombing.]
2003 Today's Example of a Most Interesting Government Purchase: The U.S. State Department awarded DynCorp, now a unit of Computer Sciences Corp., a multimillion-dollar contract April 18 to advise the Iraqi government on setting up effective law enforcement, judicial and correctional agencies. [In appreciation, Dyncorp/CSC gave $503,840 to the politicians (73% to Republicans).]
