1607 Ships carrying the colonists of the Jamestown settlement made their first landfall at Cape Henry, April 26, 1607, explored the area, named the cape, and set up a cross before proceeding up the James River.
1711 David Hume is born. David Hume was a Scottish philosopher, historian and economist.
1868 The first official celebration of Confederate Memorial Day.
1906 "Five Civilized Tribes Act" becomes law. This act sets up the "Dawes Commission" which ultimately becomes the Bureau of Indian Affairs, a massive bureaucratic organization seemingly dedicated to make the situation of the American Indians as confused as possible.
1973 Paraguay and Brazil signed the Treaty of Itaipu, providing for construction of a 12,600-megawatt dam in the border region. Construction took place under police guard and dangerous conditions; peasants in the area were forcibly relocated -- for the Common Good.
1984 Reagan, in first trip to Communist country, visits China; meets with Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping 4/28.
1986 The worst nuclear disaster, so far, occurred this date in Chernobyl USSR. 31 die immediately, many more later from radiation sickness. A current story, "Elena's Motorcycle Ride through Chernobyl", here.
1991 The U.S. announced that it would provide $1 million, a small but symbolic amount (and less than the cost of one day's bombing!), in aid to Vietnam, for providing artificial limbs to those maimed in the Vietnam War.
