Year Event
1788 Maryland joins the Union.
1914 Ludlow_massacre: President Wilson ordered infantry units into Colorado, with orders to disarm all persons, including sheriff's deputies, policemen, and members of the Colorado National Guard.
1937 Saddam Hussein, former dictator of Iraq, was born.
1945 Mussolini captured and executed at Lake Como in Italy.
1975 An article in Newsweek magazine, of this date, titled "The Cooling World," {pdf} points to "ominous signs that the Earth's weather patterns have begun to change" and that there was "a drop of half a degree [Fahrenheit] in average ground temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere between 1945 and 1968." Rather than proposing environmentalist solutions, the Newsweek article suggested that "simple measures of stockpiling food or of introducing the variables of climatic uncertainty into economic projections of future food supplies" would be appropriate. [Since the earth's temperature varies in cycles, we can expect the dire predictions of "Ice Age" v."Global Warming" to do likewise.]
1996 The U.S. president Bill Clinton (D) testifies for the defense in the trial of his former business partners Jim and Susan McDougal and former Arkansas governor Guy Tucker on charges arising from the dealings of the Whitewater property company. 1999 Today's Example of a Most Interesting Government Purchase (announced in the CBD): From the U.S. Government Printing Office: "RECRUITER CAMOUFLAGE PENCIL (APA 99-688)", AMT $443,165.00, TO V.N. Products, 55 Bonita Vista, Foothill Ranch, CA 92610 [I hope "pencil" is a typo that should be "pencils" -- but one never knows with the government!!]
2003 The U.S. Supreme Court rejected an appeal by Kentucky of a ruling that barred the display of a large granite monument with the Ten Commandments on the state Capitol grounds in Frankfort. [The same justices see nothing wrong in "swearing on the bible"]

Quote of
the Day
. . . it must be noted that the cooling in 2007 was even faster than in typical glacial transitions. If it continued for 20 years, the temperature would be 14C cooler in 2027.
By then, most of the advanced nations would have ceased to exist, vanishing under the ice, and the rest of the world would be faced with a catastrophe beyond imagining.

    — Phil Chapman, April 23, 2008 in "Sorry to ruin the fun, but an ice age cometh" [offering a solution to the increasing political tyranny of the world]
