1543 Nicolaus Copernicus published proof of a sun-centered universe. The concept was not well received by the religious authorities.
1607 Captain Christopher Newport and 105 followers founded the colony of Jamestown at the mouth of the James River on the coast of Virginia. They had left England with 144 members, 39 died on the way over.
1689 Toleration Act exempted dissenters who had taken the oaths of allegiance and supremacy from penalties for nonattendance at the services of the Church of England. (The Encyclopedia of World History. 2001.)
1824 President Monroe signs bill establishing the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. A favorite funnel for Congressional Pork!
1965 A federal law authorizing the postal interception of communist propaganda is declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in "Lamont v. Postmaster General".
1983 In an 8-1 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court held in "Bob Jones University v. U.S.", that the Internal Revenue Service could deny tax exemptions to private schools that practice racial discrimination {pdf}.
1997 In the Ukraine the first McDonald's restaurant is opened.
2002 US President Bush (R) and Russian President Putin sign a nuclear arms reduction treaty which calls for each nation to reduce their deployed strategic nuclear warheads to no more than 2200 (was 6000) within 10 years. However, at Bush's insistence, the removed warheads may be put in storage instead of destroyed.
