1756 The Black Hole of Calcutta: The nawab (Siraj-ud-Daulah) of the Bengal region captured Calcutta (June 20) and imprisoned unescaped residents in a small storeroom in the fort (later called the Black Hole), where over a hundred perished from suffocation, wounds, and the heat.
1863 West Virginia is created as the 35th U.S. state.
1936 The Anti-Price Discrimination Act (Robinson-Patman) makes it illegal for big companies to set prices so low that smaller companies are driven out of business.
1943 Even with World War II raging and unity so desperately needed, the citizens of Detroit find reasons to have race riots. 36 hours of rioting claimed 34 lives, 25 of them black and 700 injured. New York joins the fun with 6 dead in Harlem.
1951 President Truman created the Psychological Strategy Board to handle American psychological warfare--propaganda, economic, and political activities--during the "cold war."
1960 In Flemming v. Nestor (1960), the Supreme Court ruled that workers have no legal right to Social Security: Congress can cut or eliminate Social Security benefits at any time regardless of a worker's contributions.
1997 The nation's biggest tobacco companies agreed yesterday to submit to strict federal control over the way they make and market cigarettes and to pay $368.5 billion over the next 25 years to compensate states and individuals for tobacco-related health costs. Later nullified.
