1812 Napoleon and the French Grande Arme invade Russia. On December 18, 1812, what is left of the Grande Arme limps back to France.
1870 Department of Justice created
1898 The U.S. invades Santiago, Cuba and the Spanish-American War gets serious.
1936 President Roosevelt signs the Omnibus Flood Control Act into law. [While such acts provide great opportunities for government spending and employment, the results are not always the best for the public or the environment.]
1940 France surrenders to Germany, 128 years after Napoleon's attack on Russia in 1812.
1941 Germany invades Russia. Italy declares war on the U.S.S.R.
1944 The G.I. Bill of Rights (Servicemen's Readjustment Act), signed by President Roosevelt this date, will finance college educations and homes for millions of U.S. war veterans.
