Year Event
1190 Philip II of France and Richard the Lionheart of England break camp at Vezelay and head off for the Holy Land, officially launching the Third Christian Crusade.
1938 The Wheeler-Lea Act (Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act) is passed, superseding the Pure Food Act of 1906 with more stringent regulations.
1948 Stalin begins the blockade of land and water routes to Berlin. The Berlin Airlift begins.
1948 President Harry Truman signs the Selective Service Act, requiring all men between the ages of 18 and 25 to register for military service.
1968 The exchange of silver certificates for silver bullion was discontinued. [The Silver Certificate states on it that it can be exchanged for one ounce of silver. Try it. You will learn a little about government contracts.]
1972 Nixon meets with Haldeman and makes the historic recording of the Watergate "Smoking Gun" tape.
1996 Supreme Court Justices uphold civil forfeiture as anti-drug tool. Says, in U.S. v. Ursery, No. 95-345, --U.S.--, 116 S.Ct. 2135, 1996WL340815, 59CrL2191 that "the combination of prosecution and civil forfeiture does not violate the constitutional bar against double jeopardy". That is, if you have to forfeit your life savings to the government, YOU are not being punished -- the money is. Get over it.
2005 Today's Example of a Most Interesting Government Purchase: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded a contract potentially worth up to $1.25 billion to Halliburton subsidiary KBR despite ongoing allegations of overbilling by the unit, the largest U.S. contractor in Iraq. Halliburton has consistently denied wrongdoing. This contract is for support in the Balkans. Yes, we are still there and will be as long as taxpayers keep sending money. It is the patriotic thing to do.
