Year Event
1798 US Marine Corps created by an act of Congress
1804 Burr kills Hamilton in the famous duel {pdf} that resulted from a perceived insult. It was "a period of glittering political malice and fierce personal attacks."
1916 The Federal Highway act is passed by Congress and becomes law this date. It was the first federal grant-in-aid for state roads enacted.
1917 Vigilantes forcibly gather and ship over twelve hundred striking members of the IWW in cattle cars from Jerome and Bisbee, Arizona, to California and New Mexico, where they are guarded by federal military authorities.
1953 President Eisenhower (R) finally signed off on plan for CIA and British intelligence agencies to overthrow Iran's Mossadegh and give the Shah complete control. The coup consolidates power under the Shah, ensuring cooperation on oil and discouraging Communist expansion.
1955 President Dwight D. Eisenhower (R) signed Public law 84-140, which mandated that the motto "In God We Trust" must appear on all United States currency and coinage. The alleged purpose was to fend off Communism. [Thank goodness we have a constitution that forbids imposition of religious beliefs on the citizens.]
1995 The Washington Times exposes the racial antics of the BATF in their annual "Good O' Boys Roundup" in the Tennessee hills east of Chattanooga. The entrance to this family outing had a sign that said "Nigger check point". The Justice Department (OIG) checked in out -- said they could find nothing wrong. Right.
1995 President Clinton (D) extends full diplomatic recognition to Vietnam, normalizing relations with the Communist nation 22 years after U.S. disengagement from the war with Hanoi. Quote of
the Day
I sincerely hope that the Senate will give its prompt approval to this proposal. In these days when imperialistic and materialistic communism seeks to attack and destroy freedom, we should continuously look for ways to strengthen the foundations of our freedom. At the base of our freedom is our faith in God and the desire of Americans to live by His will and His guidance. As long as this country trusts in God, it will prevail. To serve as a constant reminder of this truth, it is highly desirable that our currency and coins should bear these inspiring words "In God We Trust."
    — Congressman Bennett (FL), in support of H.R. 619, a bill "Providing for the inscription of 'In God We Trust' on all United States Currency and Coins"
