622 This date later would become the starting point of the Moslem calendrical era. The Islam prophet, Mohammed and his disciples leave Mecca for another city, now called Medina (in central Saudi Arabia).
1790 Congress establishes District of Columbia.
1798 US Public Health Service established. The Marine Hospital Service was established by an act of Congress, to provide for the temporary relief and maintenance of sick and disabled seamen. This was the first prepaid medical care program in the United States, financed through compulsory employer tax and federally administered.
1918 Tsar Nicholas II and the Russian Royal Family are executed by Bolshevik revolutionaries. Follow-up.
1945 First atomic bomb detonated, Trinity Site, Alamogordo, New Mexico.
1969 The U.S. launches Apollo 11, a manned space craft to the moon, on this date. A symbol of man's greatness? [What is ironic and puzzling is that it is doubtful that we could do the same today!]
1979 In Iraq, President Al-Bakr resigns and is succeeded by Vice-President Saddam Hussein {pdf}.
1997 EPA now says expected cost of Air Quality Standards to exceed $46 billion. Others say it will likely be more that $100 billion.
