Year Event
386 BCE Rome was sacked by the Gauls under Brennus, who defeated the Roman army on the Allia on this date. (From The Encyclopedia of World History, Stearns, Houghton Mifflan Co., 2001)
1914 Convicted of murder on meager evidence, the singing Wobbly, Joe Hill is sentenced to be executed in Utah. A jury of conservative Utahans convicted him on this day in 1914 and he was sentenced to death. He was executed by firing squad the following year.
1925 Hitler Publishes his book, Mein Kampf. Dictated by Hitler during his 9 month stay in prison, the book is a bitter and turgid narrative filled with anti-Semitic outpourings, disdain for morality, worship of power, and the blueprints for his plans for world domination. The autobiographical work soon would become the bible of Germany's Nazi party.
1956 Narcotic Control Act of 1956 became law. The act increased still further the penalties for violation of the existing laws and proliferating the scope of federal control over the use, possession and sale of narcotic drugs and marijuana. Recreational drug use continued to increase.
1964 Riots break out in urban ghettoes of New York City and Rochester, the first of the series of "race" riots that will plague this country for some time in this period of the "Great Society".
1969 Mary Jo Kopechne and Senator Kennedy (D) plunged off Chappaquiddick bridge. Kennedy escapes but Mary Jo drowns. What caused the real stir was his failure to report the incident for almost ten hours. He was later found guilty of leaving the scene of the accident and given a two-month suspended sentence. A lesson in American justice: Your time in jail is inversely determined by your funds and your political power.
1972 Jane Fonda delivers an anti-war speech on Hanoi Radio, one of a series of six, an act many view as an act of treason.
1984 McDonald's Restaurant mass shooting. Armed with multiple firearms and 25-round large capacity ammunition magazines, James Oliver Huberty, 41, entered the San Ysidro, CA, McDonald's restaurant and opened fire. He shot 40 people, killing 21 and wounding 19. He was killed by a police sniper.

Quote of
the Day
The size of the lie is a definite factor in causing it to be believed, for the vast masses of the nation are in the depths of their hearts more easily deceived than they are consciously and intentionally bad. The primitive simplicity of their minds renders them a more easy prey to a big lie than a small one, for they themselves often tell little lies but would be ashamed to tell a big one.
    — Adolf Hitler - Mein Kampf - (1926)
