Year Event
1814 General Jackson's campaign against the Creek Indians ends after they ceded all their land to the U.S. The Creeks will later be moved west of the Mississippi river.
1888 DAWES ACT (MARRIAGE WITH INDIAN WOMEN) becomes law. Protects property rights of parties to the marriage.
1945 The U.S. drops the second atomic bomb on Japan (Nagasaki). The reason why atomic bombs were dropped on Japan remains a disturbing controversy to this day.
1954 The Senate passed the Agriculture Act, which set up a flexible scale of price supports for farm products.
1965 Fifty-three Die in Titan II Missile Silo Fire at Searcy, Arkansas.
1969 A White House Conference on Food, Nutrition and Health held to set the agenda for food programs, hunger, food safety and nutrition. By creating massive taxpayer funded food programs, large blocks of votes are guaranteed: from the welfare recipients and from the farmers that sell the food to the government at inflated prices.
1974 President Nixon (R) resigns in disgrace -- the first US president to do so. He was about to be impeached.
1989 The "Financial Institutions Rescue, Recovery and Enforcement Act", H.R. 1278, signed by President Bush (R), "bails out" the nation's federally insured Savings and Loan Associations at taxpayer's expense. The bill provided $166 billion over 10 years to close or merge insolvent S&Ls. The total cost was put at $400 billion. Basically it fails in its purpose but the government gets to sell many S&Ls to private investors and banks at bargain prices. (Note how the government will spend billions to make a disaster and billions more to "fix" the same disaster!). Contains "land mine" legislation that further limits freedoms of citizens!
2009 Sonya Sotomayor is sworn in as the first Hispanic Supreme Court judge, and only the third woman to take on the role.

Quote of
the Day
The only place you and I disagree . . . is with regard to the bombing. You're so goddamned concerned about the civilians, and I don't give a damn. I don't care. . . I'd rather use the nuclear bomb. . . Does that bother you? I just want you to think big.
    — Richard Nixon to Secretary of State Henry Kissinger (on the Watergate tapes)
