1906 A race riot erupts in Brownsville, Texas, when troops from a black infantry battalion allegedly kill a white bartender and wound a policeman in what becomes known as the "Brownsville Raid".
1912 The Radio Act, requiring operators to obtain a license to operate from the Federal government, is passed.
1926 Fidel Castro, Cuban communist revolutionary and leader of Cuba from 1959, born near Mayari, Cuba.
1937 Fighting begins between Japanese and Chinese at Shanghai.
1961 East German border guards begin construction of the Berlin Wall.
1981 In a ceremony at his California ranch, President Reagan (R) signed an historic package of tax and budget reductions.
1999 Today's Example of a Most Interesting Government Purchase (from the CBD):From USAID; PROFESSIONAL, ADMINISTRATIVE AND MANAGEMENT SUPPORT SERVICE, AMT=$40,000,000.00 TO Pierce Atwood Attorneys, One Monument Square, Portland, ME 04101. Apparently Hunton & Williams, 1900 K Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20006, needed help -- their award was also for $40,000,000 on 7/28/99. And for CMS Energy, 330 Town Center Drive, Dearborn, MI 48126-2712 -- who got their $40,000,000 on 06/08/99 and Southern California Edison, 2244 Walnut Grove Avenue, Rosemead, CA 91770, who got their $40,000,000 on 6/08/99.
