1791 Haitian Revolution: Dutty Boukman held a Vodou ceremony in Bois-Caïman, where hundreds of slaves vowed to die for liberty.
1846 Henry David Thoreau jailed for tax resistance.
1912 2,500 US marines invade Nicaragua to quash a revolt against US installed president, Adolfo Diaz; US remains there until 1933. Honduras and Cuba also are paid visits by the marines. Hundreds of times in the last 210 years, the United States has deployed its military forces in conflicts abroad, although the U.S. has only formally declared war on eleven occasions.
1917 China declares war on Germany and Austria.
1935 The Social Security Act signed by President F.D.R. became law, creating "Aid to Dependent Children" (now Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC)), unemployment insurance, and pension plans for the elderly.
1941 The Atlantic Charter was issued by President Roosevelt and Prime Minister Churchill. The Atlantic Charter formed the basis of the United Nations Charter.
1945 Japan surrenders unconditionally to end WW II after being devastated by two atomic bombs.
1947 The calamitous partition of British India into the modern states of India and Pakistan executed at midnight on 14-15 August.
1974 Congress authorizes US citizens to own gold.
1997 Today's Example of a Most Interesting Government Purchase (from the CBD): From USAID, "SUPPORT FOR ECONOMIC GROWTH AND INSTITUTIONAL REFORM (LEGAL AND INSTITUTIONAL REFORM), AMT $130,000,000.00 TO ARD/Checchi Joint Venture, Chemonics International, Financial Markets International, IRIS--University Research Corporation International, Price Waterhouse, LLC, and IBTCI.
1998 P.L. 105-235 (S.J.Res. 54), "Iraqi Breach of International Obligations", became public law {pdf}. Declared that by evicting weapons inspectors, Iraq was in “material breach” of its cease-fire agreement. Urged the President to take “appropriate action in accordance with the Constitution and relevant laws of the United States, to bring Iraq into compliance with its international obligations.”
