0410 Rome sacked by Alaric. (From The Encyclopedia of World History, Stearns, 2001)
1814 The ($) British burn the White House and Capitol in retaliation for the torching of the Canadian capitol, York (now Toronto) by the Americans.
1912 US passes Anti-gag law, giving federal employees right to petition government.
1939 J. Edgar Hoover, with President Roosevelt's concurrence, develops "watch lists" and a detention program for the incarceration of "suspect" American citizens. Twenty years later, he expands this plan in the name of fighting Communism. More details here.
1954 Communists are found under every rock. The "COMMUNIST CONTROL ACT OF 1954" is passed to rout them. President Eisenhower (R) reluctantly signs the bill, outlawing the Communist Party.
1966 Congress passes the Laboratory Animal Welfare Act. The intent of the original act was to protect owners of animals but by subsequent amendments and enforcement, the intent has shifted to protecting the animals.
1996 Clinton (D) declares war on tobacco. Takes aim at teen smoking with new limits on cigarette industry. (So why are we still subsidizing tobacco growers?)
1999 Today's Example of a Most Interesting Government Purchase (announced in the CBD): From the Department of the Air Force (AFRL): "INCREMENTAL NEGOTIATION AND COALITION FORMATION FOR RESOURCE-BOUNDED REASONERS, AMT $2,444,967.00, TO SRI International, 333 Ravenswood Avenue Menlo Park CA 94025. [What?]
