Year Event
1718 About 800 of French colonists arrived in Louisiana, with some of them settling in present-day New Orleans (named in honour of the Duke of Orlean in France).
1950 President Truman (D) ordered the U.S. Army to seize all the nation's railroads to prevent a general strike. The railroads were not returned to their owners until two years later.
1958 Congress gives ex-presidents allowance for life in "FORMER PRESIDENTS ACT" which is signed this date. The government will pay $2.2 million each in allowances to the living ex-presidents. The total includes a $151,800 pension for each ex-president; the rest is for office expenses including rent, staff salaries, travel costs and postage. The cost of Secret Service protection is separate. They lose it if they are impeached out of office. [Not likely to happen!]
1997 Florida has reached an $11.3 billion out-of-court settlement with the tobacco industry to recover Medicaid money spent on smokers' health costs. It's nice to no longer have to be responsible for our own personal actions! Yep, Big Mac is next!
1998 Recognizing "our nation has one of the safest food supplies in the world", President Clinton (D) today signed E.O. 13100 which establishes "President's Council on Food Safety" which is to ensure that "Federal research efforts [are guided] toward the highest priority food safety needs", among other much needed things. [Then why am I about to throw up?]

Quote of
the Day
Annual drug deaths: tobacco: 395,000, alcohol: 125,000, 'legal' drugs: 38,000, illegal drug overdoses: 5,200, marijuana: 0. Considering government subsidies of tobacco, just what is our government protecting us from in the drug war?
