Year Event
1894 Congress passed the Wilson-Gorman Tariff Act, which contained a provision for a graduated income tax that was later struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court (May 20, 1895).
1928 15 nations signed an agreement, the Kellogg-Briand Pact, in Paris that officially abolished war but lacked means of enforcement. [See how easy it is. Why don't we do the same for nuclear weapons, hurricanes, toe fungus, etc.?]
1986 CHILDREN'S JUSTICE ACT, P.L. 99-401, becomes law. [Now if we can just figure out how to keep the "justice" agencies from abusing the children -- and their families!]
1997 The Washington Post reports today that after almost a year-long battle in the courts, California can now begin implementing a controversial new law that eliminates race and sex as factors in a variety of state programs, from hiring to education and contracting. The beginning of the end of "Affirmative Action"? [I doubt it.]
1997 Today's Example of a Most Interesting Government Purchase (from the CBD): From the HSC/PKV, Brooks AFB, "WORLDWIDE FULL SERVICE ENVIRONMENTAL REMEDIAL ACTION EFFORTS", AMT = $475,000,000.00, TO Fluor Daniel GTI, Inc., Montgomery Watson Americas, Inc., IT Corporation, and Roy F. Weston, Inc. [It is nice to know that someone really cares about the environment!]
2005 California Attorney General declares that fried chips cause cancer. Maybe, but what is more important is such actions by the state can bring in piles of money as they learned from the rape of the tobacco industry.
and . . .
Quote of
the Day
[America's Foster Care system is a] quagmire that is spawning a generation of forgotten and forsaken children. Thousands are being neglected, abused, even murdered under what is ostensibly government protection.
