1632 John Locke, writer and thinker on the philosophy of government, was born.
1758 The New Jersey Legislature established the first Indian reservation on a tract of 1,600 acres.
1833 The Factory Act passed by the British Parliament forbids employment of children under age 9, forbids working children between 9 and 13 for more than 48 hours per week and requires that children under 13 be given at least 2 hours of schooling per day. Applies only to textile factories.
1997 The maker of the best-selling Ex-Lax laxatives is pulling from the market all versions of the medication containing phenolphthalein, an ingredient the U.S. Food and Drug Administration wants to ban. Rats with 50-100 times higher than human dosage died!
1997 Today's Example of a Most Interesting Government Purchase (from the CBD): From the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, "SUPPORT SERVICES--TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER AREA OF MULTIMEDIA ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION CONTROL", AMT $43,791,914, TO Science Applications International Corp. 2005 Hurricane Katrina, now a Category 4 hurricane (later corrected to "Category 3") with 230 km/h winds, makes landfall near Buras, La., at 6:10 a.m. CT (7:10 a.m. ET) and then devastates New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf coast.
2007 Six nuclear warheads "accidentally" get flown from Minot AFB to Barksdale AFB in Louisiana.
