Year Event
1916 The "Keating-Owen Act", the first of the Child-Labor laws is passed. Struck down two years later by the Supreme court which said Congress has exceeded its power in regulating "interstate commerce" (a criteria apparently ignored today).
1939 Germany still pissed about losing The Great War, invades Poland, starting World War II. A week later Americans were polled: Should we declare war and send our Army and Navy abroad to fight Germany? "NO" was the answer given by 94%.
1969 Libya: Gaddafi seizes power on September 1 in a coup against King Idris.
1983 D.A.R.E.© (yes the word is copyrighted!) was started this month in Los Angeles by L.A.P.D. (Daryl Gates). A basically useless, "feel-good" program funded at nearly a $billion per year by taxpayers and private contribution. The program may be on the ropes -- finally.
1983 The Soviets shoot down a Korean Airlines Boeing 747, flight 007, killing all 269 people aboard.
1997 Today's Example of a Most Interesting Government Purchase (from the CBD): From the Office of Naval Research; "FORAGING, VISUALIZING, MAKING SENSE AND USING INFORMATION: THEORIES AND METHODS FOR HUMAN--WEB INTERACTION", AMT $537,233.00 TO Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, 3333 Coyote Hill Road, Palo Alto, CA 94304-1314. [Well, dang. If they just wanted to know how to play on the Web, I could have told them -- for half the price!]
2004 Beslan Massacre: About 400 students killed in Russian town of Beslan by Chechen terrorists.
2004 Republican Party Platform released to the public. Quaint ideas such as "reducing government spending and growth", eliminating useless government agencies, putting a cap on the National Debt, protecting individual freedom, etc., much touted in former Platforms, have gone missing somehow. The focus of attention now is on war, gays, abortion, protecting families, strengthening the PATRIOT act to further limit individual freedom, and reduced taxes (the debt be damned!) {pdf}.
2008 Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are placed into conservatorship by the Federal
and . . .
Quote of
the Day
I am patient with stupidity, but not with those who are proud of it.
