1626 The first patent in American history, for a device to restrain natives, was issued to W. Claiborne of Jamestown, Virginia.
1872 The Crédit Mobilier scandal of the Republican Administration (U. S. Grant, President) was broken by the New York Sun on this date. Credit Mobilier was a construction company that helped build the Union Pacific Railroad. The company was owned by some union Pacific stockholders who gave the construction company huge contracts. With Union Pacific receiving government subsidies and funds, the investors were stealing government money. To avoid a governmental inquiry into the transaction, the investors gave Credit Mobilier stock to members of Congress who acquired great wealth from it. In turn, the congressmen approved federal subsidies for the cost of railroad construction without attention to expense, enabling railroad builders to make large profits, which improved the value of their stock.
1954 US Navy P2V Neptune spy plane with crew of 10 shot down by Soviet fighters approximately 40 miles off the Siberian coast.
1957 Governor Faubus (D) of Arkansas called out National Guard to prevent integration of black students into Central High School in Little Rock. President Eisenhower (R) sent in troops to enforce the law.
1961 Pub. L. 99-83, "Foreign Assistance Act" enacted. Allows giving our stuff to other countries.
1980 Iran shells Iraqi border towns (Iraq considers this as the start of the Iran/Iraq war).
1995 Japanese-American relations are strained following the rape of a 12-year-old Okinawan schoolgirl by two U.S. Marines and a sailor. Citing the end of the cold war, critics question the need to keep 45,000 U.S. troops in Japan and even more in South Korea.
1997 The Supreme Court refuses to block a California law that prohibits racial preferences in government hiring and school admissions (Proposition 209).
1998 Today's Example of a Most Interesting Government Purchase (from the CBD): From the U.S. Navy, "POLLUTION PREVENTION IMPLEMENTATION FOR DOD ACTIVITIES", AMT $3,000,000.00 TO Parsons Engineering Science, Inc., 100 W. Walnut St., Pasadena, CA 91124. [That's a lot of pollution preventing!]

Quote of
the Day
The Democrats seem to basically be nicer people, but they have demonstrated time and again that they have the management skills of celery. They're the kind of people who'd stop to help you change a flat, but would somehow manage to set your car on fire. I'd be reluctant to trust them with a Cuisinart, let alone the economy.
