1608 Captain John Smith was elected president of the Jamestown colony council in Virginia.
1823 Simon Bolivar was named president of Peru and assumed the presidency with dictatorial powers. He had led the wars for independence from Spain in Venezuela, Colombia, Peru and Bolivia.
1897 In the Lattimer Massacre, a sheriff's posse kills more than nineteen unarmed immigrant miners in Pennsylvania, United States.
1963 Twenty black students entered public schools in Alabama and Governor Wallace loses his battle against school integration.
1996 White House documents reveal the Clintons ordered the development of a computer database on more than 300,000 citizens. White House calls the system, which may have cost the taxpayers $1,700,000, simply an "expanded Rolodex."
1996 Carpenters Union ordered to hire more women by U.S. Court of Appeals in San Francisco.
1997 Today's Example of a Most Interesting Government Purchase (from the CBD): From the USAID, "TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE, TO PROMOTE LITERACY AND NUMERACY BY IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF EDUCATIONAL INSTRUCTION AND ADMINISTRATIVE EFFICIENCY IN HAITIAN PRIMARY SCHOOLS", AMT $17,187,270.00, TO Academy for Educational Development, (AED) [Not too shabby, "AED", but next time, how about grabbing a little for Mississippi!]
2000 The US federal government agreed to drop its case against Wen Ho Lee, a former Los Alamos scientist, in exchange for a single guilty plea for downloading classified material to an insecure computer. Lee was released 3 days later.
