1648 Levellers' petition repudiated the notion of economic equality through redistribution of property. This notion was espoused by the Diggers, or True Levellers, who combined the Levellers' demands for democracy presented in the Putney Debates with the Leveller definition of a free Englishman as someone who could freely dispose of his labor, property, or person. (from The Encyclopedia of World History, Sixth Edition, Peter N. Stearns, General Editor)
1919 US marines invade Honduras. Hundreds of times in the last 210 years, the United States has deployed its military forces in conflicts abroad, although the U.S. has only formally declared war on eleven occasions.
1922 A British mandate was proclaimed in Palestine, despite Arab protests. It lasted until 1948, after the United Nations authorized a partition of the territory and the state of Israel was established. The Mideast madness begins!
1941 Ground breaking ceremony for the construction of the Pentagon took place on this day. The purpose was to provide a temporary solution to the War Departmentís critical shortage of space.
1973 A military junta with US support overthrew the elected government of Chile. President Allende was found dead, alleged to have shot himself. Right.
1998 Starr Report is released describing in titillating detail the therapeutic sessions given to President Bill Clinton by Monica Lewinsky.
2001 The U.S.A. is attacked by terrorists. Three hijacked commercial airliners are crashed into the World Trade Center Towers and the Pentagon. A fourth plane, United Flight 93, crashes about 80 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, unsuccessfully reaching its target due, apparently, to a brave effort of the passengers who attacked the terrorists.
