1893 A 6,000,000 acre tract of land in the Cherokee Strip of Oklahoma Territory is opened to white settlers. 100,000 rush in.
1914 "Federal Trade Commission Act" becomes law.
1920 A terrorist bomb planted in unattended horse-drawn wagon exploded in New York on Wall Street, opposite House of Morgan, killing 35 persons and injuring hundreds more. Bolshevist or anarchist terrorists believed responsible, but crime was never solved.
1940 President Roosevelt signs Selective Service Act by which young men may be drafted into the armed services.
1941 INVASION OF IRAN by Soviet and British forces. The Allies occupied Tehran on this date.
1982 Over 800 Palestinians are massacred when Christian Phalangist militiamen enter the West Beirut refugee camps Sabra and Chatila.
1987 A treaty between the United States, Canada, and 12 other nations is signed to ban the use of CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons). Would the world's industrial nations sign such a treaty and invoke laws banning the use of CFCs, at a cost of hundreds of billions of dollars, without having really solid evidence that the CFCs are in fact the cause of the ozone depletion? You bet! Small price to pay to obtain a few votes!
