Year Event
1692 Two men and seven women were executed for witchcraft in Salem, Massachusetts. One, Giles Corey, was pressed to death for standing mute while the others were hanged. [Note, this was all done legally, for we are a "nation of law, not men".]
1961 Peace Corps established. PEACE CORPS ACT, P.L. 87-293, becomes law.
1961 President Kennedy (D) signs into law the "Juvenile Delinquency and Youth Offenses Control Act", which provided a lot of money for bureaucrats while juvenile delinquency continued to flourish.
1970 President Nixon (R) requests 1,000 new FBI agents for college campuses. Even the CIA was called to help.
1980 Solidarity union formed in Poland under leadership of Lech Walesa.
1980 The Iran-Iraq War begins, with mutual bombing of installations, including the Abadan refinery, and an Iraqi ground offensive. The border war between Iran and Iraq lasted until August 20, 1988. The U.S. did all it could to help -- by supplying Saddam with "large-scale intelligence sharing, supply of cluster bombs through a Chilean front company, and facilitating Iraq's acquisition of chemical and biological precursors". [So, what the hell did he do with all that stuff we gave him? Embarrassing.]
1988 The government of Canada apologized for the World War II internment of Japanese-Canadians and promised compensation. Some 22,000 Japanese-Canadians were interred during WW II. Their property was confiscated and sold to pay for the camps. At the end of the war they were not allowed to return to their former communities.
1997 In the farming village of Roby a standoff between police and Shirley Allen began that turned into a 5-week police siege. The "Authorities" initially showed up with a court order for a psychiatric exam and she refused to comply. She was finally captured after being shot with rubber bullets. Later, after psychiatric exams, she was sent home, considered "no threat to herself and others." Cost to taxpayers: nearly $1 million.
2011 National Debt Limit increased from $14,694 billion to $15,194 billion. Debt? I doubt that there is any intention of every paying it.

Quote of
the Day
We denounce terrorist attacks made on American citizens at home or abroad. We must take all legitimate steps to swiftly apprehend and severely punish persons committing terrorists acts. However, we must also denounce any attempts to deprive law-abiding citizens of their God-given, constitutionally-protected rights while fighting terrorism.
