1778 English navigator Captain James Cook discovered the Hawaiian Islands, which he dubbed the "Sandwich Islands" after the First Lord of the Admiralty, Lord Sandwich. About 350,000 Hawaiians inhabited them.
1919 The Versailles Peace Conference begins with the agenda to draft a treaty to settle World War I. The bitterness created by the settlement was the major cause of the horrendous World War II.
1985 After Nicaragua files charges that the United States has secretly funded contra rebels and mined Nicaraguan harbors, the United States withdraws from the World Court and announces it will no longer abide by the court's decisions.
1990 In Washington, D.C., Mayor Marion Barry is arrested by FBI agents after being videotaped smoking crack cocaine in a hotel room. [Unlike the thousands of young people sent to prison for most of their youth for minor drug infractions, not much happened to Mayor Barry. In fact he was later elected again!]
1990 A jury in Los Angeles acquits former preschool operators Raymond Buckey and his mother, Peggy McMartin Buckey, of 52 child molestation charges after 3 years of testimony and a cost to the taxpayers of $15 million.
