Year Event
1265 First English Parliament called into session by the Earl of Leicester.
1783 The fighting of the Revolutionary War ended. Britain signed a peace agreement with France and Spain, who allied against it in the American War of Independence.
1908 The Sullivan Ordinance barred women from smoking in public facilities in the United States.
1942 Top Nazis met at Grossen-Wannsee, outside Berlin, and there formulated the infamous "Final Solution" to the Jewish question. Their "final solution" called for exterminating Europe's Jews.
1946 The Central Intelligence Group, later to become the Central Intelligence Agency, is established by President Truman (D).
1981 Iran releases U.S. hostages after 444 days in captivity. Ironically it was President Carter's successor, Ronald Reagan (R), who, on this his inauguration day, was able to announce to a joyous nation that the hostages were on their way to freedom. All was arranged according to the "October surprise conspiracy theory".
1994 Shannon Faulkner uses legal force to become the first woman to attend classes at The Citadel, South Carolina's all-male military school, in its 151-year history (moves on campus in August, 1995 and quits 6 days later after being admitted to the infirmary the first day of "Hell Week".
