Year Event
1912 The state of New Mexico is admitted to the Union.
1936 The Agricultural Adjustment Act of 1933 is unconstitutional, the Supreme Court rules in United States v. Butler, on the grounds that it is unfair to enrich one group at the expense of another, but the New Deal uses soil conservation as the basis for a new effort to limit planting -- and subsidizing farmers. 1993 Former Lincoln Savings & Loan head Charles H. Keating, Jr., 69, is convicted on 73 counts of securities and wire fraud, racketeering, and conspiracy (he is sentenced to 12 years imprisonment and a fine of $125 million). His son, Charles H. Keating 3rd, 37, is found guilty on 64 similar counts. Their Phoenix S&L was seized by federal regulators in 1989. The "Keating Five", included Senators Glenn and McCain who managed to escape without too much of the stinky stuff sticking to them. (From The People's Chronology )
2004 Today's Example of a Most Interesting Government Purchase: From the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID): The U.S.-led rebuilding of war-torn Iraq entered a second phase of sorts today, when the government awarded a new multibillion dollar reconstruction contract to engineering giant Bechtel National Inc. The company has been leading repairs to Iraq's damaged infrastructures and buildings since last year. [It costs billions to blow them up and it costs even more billions to put them back together again. Such fun!]
