Year Event
1798 The Eleventh Amendment to the Constitution is ratified. Prohibits a citizen from suing another state.
1815 The Americans, under the leadership of Andrew Jackson, defeat the British in the Battle of New Orleans.
1964 President Lyndon B Johnson (D) declares War on Poverty in the State of the Union message.
1991 Pan American Airways (PanAm), one of the oldest U.S. airlines and a pioneer of transatlantic and Pacific routes, files for bankruptcy and closes its doors. The "deregulation" of the industry, which removed taxpayer supported subsidies, was a major factor in its demise.
2001 Former Louisiana Gov. Edwin Edwards was sentenced to 10 years in prison and fined a quarter of a million dollars for extorting payoffs from businessmen applying for riverboat casino licenses.
2002 "No Child Left Behind Act", Public Law No: 107-110, is signed into law by President Bush (R). Another boondoggle that increases spending on education with no measurable results. As usual, the act was not well thought out and implementation is in a mess.
