1861 The Mississippi legislature votes to secede from the Union.
1905 "Bloody Sunday" is the name given the day the Russians in St. Petersburg start their long struggle against the Tzarist regime.
1913 Richard Milhous Nixon, 37th U.S. President (1969-74), born this date (died Apr 22, 1994 at age 81). [Nailed for what all politicians do -- crooked dealings -- but somehow we never get used to it.]
1964 22 Panamanians died during riots that began after U.S. residents of the Panama Canal zone prevented them from hoisting their flag there.
