1651 Navigation Act passed in the UK. The beginning of legal asset forfeiture, in rem. One of the major reasons we fought the Revolutionary War, yet the same laws are now being put upon American citizens by their own legislatures and courts!
1974 Friedrich von Hayek wins Nobel Prize in Economics.
1980 A U.S. Coast Guard cutter opens fire on a fishing boat off Miami, loaded with marijuana, after it ignored their warnings to stop and be searched. This is the first time that the government has used naval artillery against civilians in peacetime.
1983 North Korean commandos detonated a bomb in Rangoon during a state visit by Republic of Korea officials. Twenty-one Burmese and Korean officials were killed.
1995 President Clinton (D) approved a $510,241 challenge grant to the San Diego Unified School District for the Triton Project, an effort to improve student performance in mathematics and science using a combination of technologies.
