1776 Thomas Paine publishes Common Sense.
1800 Napoleon Bonaparte, First Consul of France, concluded the Treaty of San Ildefonso with Spain, which returned Louisiana, whose boundaries were undefined, to French ownership in exchange for a Spanish kingdom in Italy.
1896 Rural Free Delivery of mail began in US. [And why not? We who struggle with the country life have the tax burden for all kinds of luxuries for city folks!]
1934 During October of this year, Britain institutes the "Milk in Schools" supplying one-third pint of milk each day to nearly half of the students who pay little or nothing for it. Fattened the farmers more than the children!
1949 Recognized and celebrated as the day of the "Founding of the People's Republic of China".
1973 Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (29 U.S.C. 794) as amended -- Title 5 of P.L. 93-112 (87 Stat. 355), signed this date, prohibits discrimination on the basis of handicap under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.
1974 The Watergate Trial began.
1979 The United States returns sovereignty of the Panama canal to Panama.
1991 South Africa's "Aliens Control Act" commences on this date.
2008 Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 passed. The U.S. Secretary of the Treasury authorized to spend $700 billion on the banking system.
