1492 Christopher Columbus’s ships, Niña, Pinta, and Santa Maria, landed in the Bahamas.
1977 President Carter (D) signs the "Community Reinvestment Act" (CRA) (P.L. 95-128 {pdf}, 91 Stat. 1147) in 1977 to combat "redlining," the "systematic denial of credit to persons living within a certain area. Which is to say, banks are now forced to make loans to people for other than economic reasons. The cost of bad loans is now subsidized by those with good credit.
1984 "Comprehensive Forfeiture Act of 1984" (P.L. 98-473), part of the "COMPREHENSIVE CRIME CONTROL ACT OF 1984", extends the government options on seizures and forfeitures of private property to include real property "used, or intended to be used, to commit or facilitate a federal drug felony".
1984 "Armed Career Criminal Act (ACCA)" (P.L. 98-473), part of the "COMPREHENSIVE CRIME CONTROL ACT OF 1984", establishes the famous "3 strikes yer out" solution to crime.
1985 VP George Bush (R) visits China, Oct. 13-18, announces US agreement to speed export of some high-technology products to China; Taiwan issue is raised by Chinese leaders as obstacle to Sino-US relations.
2000 An explosion from a floating terrorist bomb blew a large hole in the hull of the U.S. Navy ship, USS Cole. At least 17 U.S. sailors were killed, and dozens of other Americans were injured or missing.
2002 Indonesia: Multiple car bombs explode outside nightclubs in Bali, killing 202.
1997 Today's Example of a Most Interesting Government Purchase (announced in the CBD): From the U.S. Marshals Service: "TOWING, STORAGE, MAINTENANCE, AND DISPOSAL OF SEIZED/FORFEITED VEHICLES IN THE WESTERN DISTRICT OF WASHINGTON", AMT $1,094,850.00, TO Manheim Auctions Government Services, Inc. [As you see, Forfeiture & Seizure has become a HUGE business]
