1883 The U.S. Supreme Court overturns the Civil Rights Act of 1875.
1914 "Clayton Antitrust Act" becomes law. We worry about big business abuse and limited competition.
1947 The CIA is created by the National Security Act.
1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a bill creating the Department of Transportation.
1966 The "Endangered Species Preservation Act", becomes law. The Fish and Wildlife service initially lists 78 species as being "endangered". The number of "endangered species" will grow exponentially over the following years to a count of 1351 in the US, as of 10/13/2007.
1969 Vietnam Moratorium Day; millions nationwide protest the war
1970 The Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act (part of the ORGANIZED CRIME CONTROL ACT), signed by President Nixon (R), will be used in the 1980s to prosecute both Mafia kingpins and white-collar criminals, notably Wall Street traders using privileged information. Good for harassing anti-abortionists and seizing private citizen's personal property also.
1970 "The Comprehensive Drug Abuse prevention and Control Act" passed. Allows forfeiture of property without due process. [I thought due process was guaranteed by our Constitution?]
1991 Clarence Thomas, a black Conservative, is appointed to the Supreme Court.
1993 Nelson Mandela and F.W. de Klerk were named winners of the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to end apartheid.
