1748 | Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, negotiated largely by Britain and France, with the other powers following their lead, ended the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748), known in America as King George's War.

1854 | The Ostend Manifesto. The American ministers to Britain, France, and Spain, instructed to confer on the best means of acquiring Cuba, met at Ostend and drew up the manifesto saying that if Spain refused to sell Cuba, the United States would be justified in taking it by force. Not enacted.

1912 | This date marks the beginning of the First Balkan War. The first of the Balkan wars occurred when several independent Balkan states sought to liberate the rest of the Balkan Peninsula from the rule of the Ottoman Empire.

1969 | Federal government bans use of cyclamates artificial sweeteners. That their use is not actually harmful but banning is should not surprise you.

1977 | West German commandos stormed a plane hijacked by the terrorists, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), freeing all of the hostages.

2005 | Today's Example of a Most Interesting Government Purchase: General Dynamics received a $247 million contract in August to dismantle and recycle 40,000,000 pounds of obsolete bombs, even though it was the high bidder by $60 million, government documents show. Trucking these bombs through populated areas makes life more interesting for the natives.
