Year Event
1962 The Cuban Missile Crisis began when President Kennedy (D) announced a naval blockade against Cuba in protest over the installation of Soviet missile bases on the island. The world was on the brink of a nuclear war. A chronology of events, before and after, is here.
1968 The Gun Control Act of 1968, Public Law 90-618, becomes law.
1981 US National debt topped $1 TRILLION this date.
1986 The "TAX REFORM ACT OF 1986", P.L. 99-514, tightens up the screws in the "alternative minimum tax (AMT)" code which allows the government to force a higher tax out of you that they couldn't figure out how to do legitimately. On the plus side, the new Tax Bill restructures the tax code to reduce 15 brackets to 2 with a top level of only 28%.
1989 President Bush (R) vetoes a bill that would give financial aid to women needing abortions after being raped.
1994 "Rhinoceros and Tiger Conservation Act of 1994" becomes law. "A bill to assist in the conservation of rhinoceros and tigers by supporting and providing financial resources for the conservation programs of nations whose activities directly or indirectly affect rhinoceros and tiger populations, and of the CITES Secretariat. " As you can see, Congress is getting desperate for things to spend money on!
1997 Today's Example of a Most Interesting Government Purchase (from the CBD): From the DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE (CM): "MANAGED CARE SUPPORT SERVICES FOR REGION 2 & 5. AMT $3,072,094,430, TO ANTHEM ALLIANCE FOR HEALTH. [That is 3 Billion! Would it not be cheaper to let the military use their own medical facilities -- as they used to do??]
and . . .
