Year Event
1857 The start of the "Mormon War" between the U.S. Army and the Mormons: Fort Bridger was burned by the Mormon Danites, along with forage for animals and wagon trains.
1913 The Underwood-Simmons Tariff Act (Cordell Hull gets the blame) goes into effect. What is really interesting here is that it is an excellent example of "Stealth Legislation" -- it implemented the Income Tax authorized by the 16th Amendment!
1922 Mrs. Rebecca L. Felton was appointed as the first US woman senator.
1932 Iraq becomes an independent state.
1942 President Franklin Roosevelt (D) established the Office of Economic Stabilization, authorizing controls on farm prices, rents, wages and salaries.
1965 President Johnson (D), standing in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty in New York harbor, signs the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965. It ordered elimination of the national origins quota system in favor of a worldwide quota blind to national origin. Immigration was redistributed by pooling unused quotas and making them available on a first-come, first-served basis to oversubscribed nations. The Asia-Pacific Triangle designation of "undesirable" was abolished. Another disaster, of course.
1970 BSA [Bank Secrecy Act (BSA); official name: Currency and Foreign Transaction Reporting Act]: Implemented reporting system for large financial transactions (over $10,000); intent of the legislation was to control the flow of criminally obtained proceeds out of the US. Supreme Court held in 1976, in "United States v. Miller", that a depositor had no right to privacy.
1990 Germany reunites after 43 years of "East"/"West" separation.
1993 U.S. Army Rangers ambushed in Mogadishu, Somalia. 18 Americans killed, 84 wounded. The attempt to capture Aidid is abandoned.
1995 O.J. Simpson found not guilty. It is obvious that the jury system is seriously flawed. But what are the alternatives?
1996 The federal governmentís EPA announces it will purchase 158 homes and relocate their residents as well as the residents of 200 apartments in the Escambia section of Pensacola, Fla., like its earlier purchases at Love Canal and Times Beach, proves beyond doubt that dioxin has made the transition from possible health risk to useful political tool -- as reported by U.S. News. "...toxic waste program stands as the most wasteful effort of all [government programs]" says the New York Times.
2008 "Wall Street Bailout" (cynically called "Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008" by the politicians) bill passed and signed by the president even though the public opposed it by, some say, 10 to 1 or more. To show the public that they are not intimidated and will conduct business as usual, Congress critters added $112 billion for pork!
2008 National Debt Limit increased from $10,615 billion to $11,315 billion. What me worry?
and . . .
Quote of
the Day
This bill is putting us on the brink of economic disaster.
    — McCain, while voting for the Bailout Bill
