1635 The Massachusetts leadership, in 1633, proposed an oath of loyalty to its government from all citizens. Roger Williams rebutted by asserting that an oath is a religious obligation and should not be required of all men as not all men are religiously regenerate. He was brought before the General Court on this date but declined to change his views. He was told to pack up and get out. He did and went off to form the State of Rhode Island, a colony with a charter giving preeminence to religious liberty.
1780 Serfdom is abolished in Bohemia and Hungary (From Chronology of Modern World: 1763 - 1992, 2nd edition, Macmillan Library, 1994).
1950 Over 30,000 Chinese troops invade Tibet. The Dalai Lama takes over the running of the government. The Tibetan government appeals to the United Nations for help. But the Indian and British delegations persuade the General Assembly not to discuss the matter. Within a year, the Tibetan government is forced to surrender.
1963 President John F. Kennedy (D) signs nuclear test ban treaty between United States, Britain and the Soviet Union. 36 years later, the Senate still has not ratified it in spite of overwhelming public support.
1975 President Ford (R) signed Public Law 94-106 admitting women to the military academies.
1996 The New York Times published a piece by conservative columnist William Safire entitled "The Asian Connection" which uncovered the John Huang affair. Safire implied Clinton patronage by Huang and large illegal contributions from the foreign influence of James Riady, heir to the booming Indonesian Lippo business group.
2001 The U.S. begins bombing strategic Taliban sites in Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom). Osama bin Laden issues a statement calling on all Muslims to wage a holy war against America. A detailed history to 2012 is here.
2008 Federal Judge Orders That Guantánamo Bay Detainees Be Freed: Judge Ricardo Urbina, of the Federal District Court, orders the Bush administration to release 17 members of the Uighur Muslim minority from western China, saying they have never posed a threat to the U.S., nor have they fought against the U.S. They have been held at Guantánamo Bay since 2002.
