Year Event
1889 The state of Montana is admitted to the Union.
1923 “BEER HALL PUTSCH” in Munich, occasioned by the general crisis resulting from the Ruhr occupation and the financial collapse. General Erich Ludendorff and Adolf Hitler, leader of a growing National Socialist Party, attempted to overthrow the Bavarian government. The rising was poorly organized and was easily put down. Hitler was arrested and sentenced to five years in prison. While serving his term he wrote Mein Kampf, a book outlining his career, his theories, and his program. He was released after serving less than a year, and at once resumed his propaganda and organizing activity. (Encyclopedia of World History)
1965 "Higher Education Act of 1965", revised by Public Law 105-244, signed into law by President Johnson.
1985 Pub. L. 99-145, "DOD Authorization Act", allows giving away of stuff belonging to the DOD to foreign countries for "humanitarian relief". Which means, of course, DOD gets to buy new stuff to replace it with. It is so much fun!
1989 The "public debt limit" raised from $?? trillion to $3,122,700,000,000 by our exalted leaders.
1994 U.S. Republicans regain majorities in both houses of Congress for the first time in 40 years as voters reject Democratic incumbents. [Finally, after all these years we will have fiscal responsibility, IRS downsized, elimination of the Departments of Commerce, Housing and Urban Development, Education, and Energy, and MOST IMPORTANT, no more "Nation Building"!]
1994 California voters pass anti-immigrant ballot initiative Proposition 187 by 59% to 41%. The courts immediately block it and the situation remains the same to this day. [In case there are some that still think we have a democracy, this should settle the issue!]
1994 Oregon voters approved and thereby enacted the "Death With Dignity Act {pdf}." It was immediately challenged in the courts.
2006 Donald Rumsfeld resigns as Secretary of Defense. One day after the midterm elections that turned control of Congress over to the Democrats, Bush announced Rumsfeld would step down and be replaced by former CIA Director Robert Gates.
