1478 Pope Sixtus IV issued a papal bull extending the power of the Inquisition to Spain. The Inquisition, established in some countries in the thirteenth century, was noted for its efficiency in handling people with mental illness torture and execution.
1824 Barrackpore Mutiny: British kill about 100 Indian mutineers.
1835 Second Seminole War began. This bloody and costly war convinced the Seminoles to give up Florida.
1870 US Weather Bureau begins operations.
1898 Anglo-German agreement regarding the Samoan Islands. Following a period of rivalry among Britain, Germany, and the United States for control of the islands and considerable internal Samoan fighting, the conflicts were resolved by the abolition of the Samoan monarchy and the division of the islands among the three powers. 1943 Rent control goes into effect in New York. The order was issued Sept. 28, 1943, that rents for all "houses, tenements, apartments, hotels and rooming houses" would be frozen at the March 1 levels, effective Nov. 1. While this law resulted from war time emergencies, rent control has not gone away to this date.
1952 The first hydrogen bomb is exploded, with the force of 10 million tons of TNT, over the island of Enewetok in the Pacific.
1954 Algeria Revolution Day.
1979 The federal government announced a $1.5 billion loan-guarantee plan to aid the nation's third largest automaker, Chrysler Corp., which had reported a loss of $460.6 million for the 3rd quarter of 1979.
1990 McDonald's, under pressure from environmental groups, said it would replace plastic food containers with paper.
