1889 Oregon and Washington are admitted as the 42nd and 43rd U.S. states.
1918 Fighting in World War I ends with the signing of an armistice between the Allies and Germany.
1978 "The Comprehensive Drug Abuse prevention and Control Act" was amended (P.L. 95-633) to expand the scope of what personal property may be seized without due process.
1983 The United States begins deployment of 572 intermediate-range cruise missiles in Europe. Causes the Soviet Union to back out of talks intended to reduce the number of intermediate cruise missiles there.
1996 Time magazine asks the question, "WERE TRADE MISSIONS FOR SALE?" Well yes, particularly with Ron Brown running the show.

Veterans make up one in four homeless people in the United States, though they are only 11 percent of the general adult population, according to a report to be released today by the National Alliance to End Homelessness, a public-education nonprofit. . . . Some advocates for the homeless say that it took nearly a decade for the lives of many Vietnam vets to fall apart to the point that they became homeless. The veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan are becoming homeless much quicker, which is not a good sign for the future. There is expected to be a huge influx of more homeless as more troops start coming home.
