| 1935 | President Roosevelt (D) proclaims the Philippine Islands a free commonwealth. The U.S. commonwealth status of the Philippines was adopted as part of the Tydings-McDuffie Act, an American resolution that called for the gradual transition toward complete Philippine independence by 1946. The four-year Japanese occupation during World War II delayed their independence further -- the Philippines finally achieve full independence on July 4, 1946, for the first time in over four hundred years.
