1941 President Roosevelt (D) signed H. J. Res. 237 repealing sections 2, 3 and 6 of the Neutrality Law with respect to commerce with belligerents, combat areas, and arming of merchant vessels. [Makes sense. Such laws are only practical when there is no opportunity for war.]

2001 The US intensifies its bombing of civilians in Afghanistan. Little notice given by the American press or public since very few of the victims are Americans.
2005 Today's Example of a Most Interesting Government Purchase: Raytheon Co. on Tuesday said it won a $1.3 billion Army contract to develop and test a new radar system designed to protect troops from cruise missile attacks. Quote of
the Day
As a result of the war, corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until wealth is aggregated into the hands of a few and the Republic is destroyed. I feel at this moment more anxiety for the safety of my country than ever before, even in the midst of the war. [emphasis added]
    — President Lincoln
